Nelson Mandela

1.  Nelson Mandela was the first South African president who was elected in a completely democratic election.
2. He won the Nobel Peace prize in 1993.
3. Retired from public life in June 1999
4. He spent 27 years in prison
5. He was born in Mvezo on July 18,
1918
6. He died on Dec.5 2013
7. Mandela lived simply, donating a third of his annual income to the Nelson Mandela children's fund which he founded in 1995
8. On Nov.7 1962 he was sentenced to 5 years in prison for leaving the country without a passport.
9. He sacrificed his private life and his youth for his country and he never gave up.
10. He not only rescued South Africa from a dangerous , racially charged civil war ; he also gave hope to millions that wanted the right to live with freedom and dignity.
