Dec.17 learning blog

Today we went over the chapter 8 and 9 vocabulary. Since there were a lot of people who didn't finish, they were sent outside to complete the homework. The vocabulary questions we worked on were mainly defining the meaning in the statement. This skill can benefit greatly by translating normal conversations with slang into words most people would understand. These skills will help in the future during job interviews;instead of using the normal slang people are used to, they can speak normally on a format most people know. The reason why we checked over the questions was because people would know the answers to the questions on the quiz. Homework We have to finish chapters 9 to 12 by Wednesday, and the people who haven't brought in the money for adopt a family still has to gve it to the teacher. I think that is it.

motivation

What is motivation? Motivation is something that makes you more confident and something that brings you up. When people say I will give you candy or money if you finish your work the person will be more motivated to get the reward.

Nelson is primarily emotional and his views are often dominated by his feelings and his own personal subjective experiences, either than reason, logic or abstract principles. It is difficult for him to judge situations fairly and objectively because his personal sympathies and loyalties usually factor in. Nelson Mandela takes things very personally and sometimes builds a wall around himself to shield himself from pain and rejection. Nelson Mandela feels rather shy and vulnerable at heart. He also is moody and experiences frequent mood swings. Nelson Mandela needs to have a place and time in his life to withdraw, introspect, dream and replenish himself; Nelson Mandela becomes cranky and unhappy with those around him.

Nelson Mandela functions in an instinctive, irrational manner and likes to immerse himself in creative activities where he can express his feelings, imagination and instincts. Mandela often loves to cook, since it can be both creative and a way to nurture and nourish others. Nelson Mandela also has a great affinity for music, because it evokes and communicates feelings that may be difficult or impossible to put into words. His compassion, sensitivity, and imagination are Mandela's strong points. His faults include an inability to let go of the past and move forward, clannishness and prejudice, and a tendency for self-pity when facing hardship.

Humanities Reflections

Today in humanities we talked about motivation and about what keeps us motivated. From what I learnt, a couple of things that motivate us are money, love for what you are doing or any kind of reward. But I think that it all depends on what we are doing. I think that money would be a good reward but only once in a while because then we will start to get used to it and slack off. I believe that if you are doing something because you love it is the best kind to motivation because you don't really get anything out of it but it still makes you happy doing it

Learning blog

What did we do today?

We discussed about money for adopted a family and see who brought money and who didn't; we also were talking about who was going to go shopping for toys, food, and clothing. We were talking about if there should be a consequence for not bringing the money on time. After that we checked who finished the October/ November HACE assignments; you have to hand in or redo your HACE homework before December 20, 2013. At the end of class we had to hand in our questions for chapter 1-8 and read up to chapter 9.

Why we did it?

We are talking about who brought the money in for adopt a family because we committed to it; we also talked about toys, food, clothing so it will be easier for everyone instead of one person going. For the HACE homework we talked about it because some people didn't finish it or did a bad job on it, and mrs. Caldwell will give us a I if we don finish it before December 20th.

Reflections/ connections?

Adopt a family helps you outside humanities for planning out if you have a baby or something and it also gives you more responsibility. Hace helps you outside for jobs because when you get older you can look
back.

Tips?

Don`t forget to buy food, clothing and toys and to finish your HACE homework.

Motivation

Motivation, what's that? Motivation is something that helps you want to do something or inspires you to do something. Things like receiving money or candy etc. may help us want to do something since we are getting a reward in return. You might not like going to school, but maybe you are going on a field trip with your class and maybe you want to go because it's going to be fun. Fun things will help to motivate you. There are also punishments. Maybe if you don't like to do your homework, your teacher gives you a detention and then you can't go to Tim Horton's with your friends for lunch. If you understood that if you do your homework all the time, you will not get a detention and you will be able to go out for lunch with your friends. You may hate doing your chores, but if your parents gave you $10 dollars every week if you did them, it is motivating you to do them; just think by the end of the month you would have $40 dollars, which would mean you would be making $480 dollars a year just by doing a few chores around the house. Anything can motivate you!

Ever wonder how Nelson Mandela got motivated to change the world? The same way you might get motivated to do something. He created the first law firm in South Africa for black people, he did that so he could help them with their difficulties. Mandela was motivated to do that. He wanted to change the world. He wanted to change society in South Africa between blacks and whites. Mandela believed that every single race is equal to one another and that is the way that it should be. Nelson Mandela went to prison for 27 years, that motivated him. What did it motivate him to do? It motivated Mandela to take a stand for what he believed in.

Dec.10th Learning Blog

Today in humanities we started off by looking at everyone's group blogs to make sure they did it and if they didn't then they would have to come in at flex. Next we did our quiz on chapters 7-8 of 'The Outsiders'. Then we watched a video of tips for students and teachers and it explained that even students can sometimes be teachers and that teachers can sometimes be students.
Connections: The homework check today was important because in the future no one will tell us to do our homework and the next thing you know, the teacher will come and collect it if your done or not. The connections I have with the video are that when you need help from a classmate then their temporarily the teacher and when someone else needs help then your temporarily the teacher.
Reminders/Homework tips:
* Remember to bring $10 for adopt a family
* Write 10 things about Nelson Mandela and about what made him so important and then post it on the blog. Also write a couple of links down too.

What makes good collaboration

One really important thing about collaboration is to have communication skills. If you talk to your teammates, you can share your ideas and combine them to better ideas. A perfect example of that is the invention of the internet. I am not 100% sure what small ideas lead up to it but I do know that it was made of small ideas.
Another important thing is to encourage crazy ideas. The idea of the plane was insane, but when people actually did it, it worked! Then the idea of flying over the Atlantic Ocean over to Europe came up. That was also insane, but people accepted the challenge, and did it!
The last thing I know is good for collaboration is teamwork. Working together can get things done faster, and can also help you for later group projects. It gets things done.

Collaboration work

During the video on IDEO working on the shopping cart, there were many useful tips in collaboration, such as not critisizing others which can relieve the fear of having a bad idea. Diverse background is also useful by connecting the good part of knowledge one has to another. Never once during the video they argued over anything because they accept wild ideas, in fact encourage them fairly because the more times you fail, the quicker you will succeed. By posting ideas on a wall and recieving feedback from fellow peers, also helps to improve the group project/assignment. By working together, like they said in the video will be fun for all the people who participate.

Dec. 9 learning blog

Today we talked about collaboration work and learning blogs. The reason why Ms.Lees talked about the learning blogs was because apparently some people who were supposed to do the learning blog did not follow the criteria, thus the extra two weeks of learning blogs was added as homework. We reviewed the criteria to recieve a 3/5, which is the average mark of on which the teacher expects. Later in the block, we watched the IDEO video on recreating a shopping cart, as a better model which includes people nesscesities and safety compared to the present shopping carts. We were supposed to write a paragraph about the teamwork tips based on the video. The reason why Ms.Lees had to review the expectations of the learning blog was because so that people who do the learning blog would ubderstand the proper criteria. This is a valuable skill that will be needed during a job because then you will know the expectations the boss holds for you, thus can prevent you from being fired. The reason why we watched the video about IDEO recreating the shopping cart was to understand collaboration work and to get along with fellow team members or something like that. This skill will be used often during work because most people will have to work with their coworkers. The homework was to write a paragraph on the collaboration work IDEO did on tips and skills that you would use during group work. Dec.10 is the test on chapter 7~8. For people who have already read the story, please review the chapter by rereading, or skimming through in order to not get confused with the other chapters.

Good collaboration skills

There are many things you need to be when you want to have good collaboration with your team.
#1. If no one else wants to be the team leader then you should take charge. This will show that you want to be part of the team and that you are willing to help.
#2. If the members of your group are working on one project together the be sure to divide the work evenly so that everyone is doing something important and contributing to the team. Also be sure to listen to everyone's ideas and try to include a little bit of everyones.
#3. Let the team trust you. By this I mean that if its your day to write a paragraph then be responsible and put all your effort into it. If you don't understand something then you can post a question on the blogger and get your classmates to help you out.

These are some of the things you need to be to become a good group member and to work well with your team.

Good Collaboration

Good collaboration is a great way of putting our minds together. Their are many different ways of good collaboration. One of them could be pooling all of your ideas together to make an even bigger and better idea. Try to be respectful to each other, even if their idea is not the best you don’t need to be rude about it. Everyone’s idea is helpful and can be used in a different way. I think communication with each other is also important, because if you don’t communicate how are you going to be successful with your group project. “Collaboration and cooperation will beat competition every time.” –Gail Lynn Goodwin

Learning Blogs Feedback

Thank you for your blog entries.  I have added comments on some of them and I would like you to read them.  I have noticed that there are some dates missing and one member did not post any entries (meaning they will be receiving an I for this assignment).  Although this is a group blog, everyone needs to take responsibility for his or her share of the work.  Manreet, Osman, and Yee Jun please go into your profiles and change your display names to only your first name and last initial.  If you are having trouble with this speak to your classmates to help you change this (or Ms. Lees if no one can help).
